Actress Alleges Physical Abuse by Director During Filming

Actress Mamitha Baiju, predominantly active in Malayalam cinema, has come forward with serious allegations against director Bala, stemming from their collaboration on the film ‘Vanangaan’.

Baiju alleges experiencing both mental harassment and physical assault from the director during the filming process.

Notably, ‘Vanangaan’ also stars Tamil superstar Suriya.

Recalling an incident from the sets, Baiju mentioned a particular scene where she felt inadequately prepared due to the rushed shooting schedule.

She recounted, “There’s a scene called Villadichampaatu in it (‘Vanangaan’). Seeing it, I asked if I (the character) had been practicing it for a long time (and was experienced) or if it is depicted as she is attempting it for the first time. I was told that my character is portrayed as having extensive experience. In such a scenario, I should be adept in the movements, right? Because when performing, you have to sing while playing a drum, and it’s done in a particular style too. He (Bala) then pointed me to a woman (a Villadichampaatu artiste) and told me to look at her doing it.”

She further explained, “As soon as I looked, he said okay and announced that we were going for a take. I was shocked and not ready for it. I hadn’t even understood what they were singing. It took me three tries to learn it. In between, he scolded me quite a few times.”

Regarding Bala’s behavior, Baiju mentioned that she was forewarned about his temperament and advised not to take it personally. However, she also disclosed instances of physical abuse, stating, “He used to beat me too.”

Notably, Suriya also exited the project following similar issues. While Baiju did not explicitly attribute her departure to the director’s behavior, it remains a notable aspect of her experience.

Recognized for his unprofessional conduct on set, Bala’s behavior has drawn criticism in the past.

Subsequently, actor Arun Vijay stepped into the lead role after Suriya’s departure.

Despite the controversies, ‘Vanangaan’, directed and written by Bala, is slated for release in March.
