Charminar Express Derailment in Telangana: Three Coaches Off-Tracks at Nampally Railway Station, Six Injured

On the morning of January 10, a significant incident occurred as three coaches of the Chennai-Hyderabad Charminar Express derailed at the Hyderabad Deccan Railway station in Nampally. This incident resulted in six individuals sustaining injuries, and those injured are currently receiving treatment at the railway hospital, as confirmed by Rakesh, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of South Central Railway.

The Hyderabad Deccan railway station is the terminal destination for the Charminar Express. Rakesh explained to ANI, “The incident took place at around 9:15 AM. This Railway station is a terminal station where trains end. The train should have stopped before the end; however, the train overshot. Three coaches of the train got derailed in the incident. Around five people who stood near the doors of the train suffered minor injuries in the incident. They are being treated at the Railway Hospital.”

South Central Railway (SCR) officials revealed that the train, upon arrival at the station, was moving at a slow speed and overshot the last point, leading to the derailment of coaches S2, S3, and S6. The jerk resulting from this derailment caused injuries to six passengers.

An inquiry will be initiated to determine the cause of this unfortunate incident, according to the officials. The injured passengers are undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital. The train had completed its journey from Chennai and arrived in Hyderabad on Tuesday evening.

This incident follows other recent derailments, including two coaches of a Bhopal-bound passenger train near Kota Junction on January 6 and four coaches of the Ajmer-Sealdah Express at Ajmer Junction on December 25. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in these incidents. Additionally, the Bandra Terminus-Jodhpur Suryanagari Express derailed between Rajkiawas – Bomadra section in Jodhpur Division of North Western Railway (NWR) in January this year, impacting 11 coaches. The train was headed to Jodhpur from Bandra Terminus.

Five individuals sustained injuries in the incident, and they are currently undergoing treatment, as mentioned by Rakesh, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of South Central Railway. The mishap occurred at approximately 9 in the morning at the Hyderabad Deccan Railway station in Nampally.

Rakesh elaborated that the station serves as a terminal station, where trains are intended to stop. However, in this instance, the train did not come to a halt as expected and moved ahead, leading to the derailment of three bogies. Six people standing near the door of the train suffered injuries in the process. The injured individuals were promptly admitted to the Railway Hospital, where medical treatment is being administered.

This incident emphasizes the ongoing efforts of the Railway Department to enhance safety and prevent accidents. The Railways had recently conducted armor efficiency trials between Mathura and Palwal, achieving a speed of 140 kilometers per hour. Prior trials at speeds of 130 kmph were conducted at various locations before implementing the system in three sections of the South Central Railway.

The Kavach system, designed to enhance safety, is already operational on 1,465 route km and 139 locomotives in three sections of the South Central Railway. However, testing cannot be carried out on that route due to speed restrictions. It’s worth noting that trains typically operate at a maximum speed of 130 km per hour on all rail networks in India, except for the Delhi-Agra section.
