Exclusive: Best-Selling Cars in India for 2023 – Swift Surpasses WagonR and Baleno, Brezza Outperforms Nexon

In the list of top-selling cars in 2023, Maruti Suzuki India dominated with seven models, followed by one from Hyundai Motor India and two from Tata Motors.

The Indian automotive sector continued its robust performance in the calendar year 2023, achieving its highest-ever annual domestic volume of 4,108,000 units. This surpasses the previous record of 3,792,000 units set in 2022.

In 2023, Maruti Suzuki India, the country’s leading automaker, secured a prominent position with seven models featured among the top 10 best-selling cars of the year. Hyundai Motor India contributed one model, while Tata Motors had two models on the list.

Among the top 10 best-selling cars in India for 2023, there were four SUVs, three hatchbacks, one sedan, one van, and one MPV, showcasing the diverse preferences of the Indian car buyers.

In 2023, the Maruti Suzuki Swift retained its position as the best-selling car, recording sales of 203,469 units. Following closely, the Maruti Suzuki WagonR secured the second spot with 201,302 units sold. Notably, these two cars were the only ones to surpass the 200,000-unit sales mark during the year.

In the premium hatchback category, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno emerged as the top-seller in 2023, achieving sales of 193,988 units.

The SUV segment witnessed a fierce competition between the Maruti Suzuki Brezza and the Tata Nexon. The former slightly edged ahead, registering sales of 170,588 units, compared to the latter’s 170,311 units.

Maintaining the prominence of the sedan segment, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire secured a robust sales volume of 157,522 units. In the mid-size SUV category, the Hyundai Creta led with sales reaching 157,311 units.

The Tata Punch, an entry-level SUV from Tata Motors, showcased an impressive performance in 2023, garnering sales of 150,182 units.

Representing the van segment, the Maruti Suzuki Eeco achieved sales of 136,010 units, while in the MPV category, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga secured a position with sales reaching 129,967 units.
