Google, Amazon, and Other Tech Giants Consider Halting Hiring in India as Job Openings Decline by 90 Percent

Amidst the challenges posed by an economic slowdown and layoffs in Silicon Valley, the Indian tech space is feeling the impact as major tech giants, such as Google, Amazon, Meta, and Apple, are reportedly slowing down their recruitment processes and contemplating a possible pause in hiring.

As per a recent report by the Economic Times (ET), these tech giants are tapping the brakes on hiring due to the global economic slowdown. The report cites data from Xpheno, a staffing firm, revealing that the active job postings by these tech giants in India have plummeted by 90 percent compared to 2022. Presently, these companies have approximately 200 open positions in India, showcasing a 98 percent decrease from their typical hiring volumes.

This hiring slowdown aligns with the broader challenges faced by the industry in the current economic climate. The global economy is experiencing a downturn, prompting companies to focus on revenue generation, implement restructuring measures, and witness a slowdown in various projects.

Prasadh MS, Head of Workforce Research at Xpheno, emphasized that the low to no hiring activity observed among these companies is likely to impact the movement of tech talent, particularly in the experienced lateral layers. He noted that the hiring pause in major companies sends a signal to exercise caution in smaller firms. “Maintaining the status quo requires replacement hiring action, with no significant net talent additions recorded,” he added.

Industry experts and IT analysts anticipate a continued cautious approach to hiring for the next two quarters, given weakened demand and a focus on enhancing employee utilization.

Data indicates that the economic slowdown and concerns about a potential recession have had a substantial impact on the tech sector, resulting in a sharp decline in hiring. By December 2022, active demand from major tech companies had fallen by 78 percent compared to July, reaching a 1.5-year low.

“The total number of active listed openings globally is currently under 30,000 across the Big Tech players and their affiliates. Globally, Big Tech companies, including Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, have cut hundreds of thousands of jobs,” the report added.

Notably, major tech giants like Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Netflix, and Google currently employ just under 150,000 people in their core operations and captives in India. However, 2023 has witnessed a significant hiring slowdown.

Rishi Jhunjhunwala, senior vice-president covering IT at IIFL Securities, expresses cautious optimism, stating, “‘Hiring should slowly start picking up in 2024 as some of the overhiring from 2023 gets adjusted. While the growth outlook hasn’t fully recovered, there are signs of gradual improvement in the coming year.'”
