India witnessed a surge in Covid-19 cases on Saturday, reporting 743 new infections, marking the highest single-day increase in 225 days, as per the Union health ministry. Over the last 24 hours, seven new fatalities were recorded, including three from Kerala, two from Karnataka, and one each from Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu, according to the ministry’s 8 am update.

The rise in daily cases comes after a period of double-digit figures until December 5, with the resurgence attributed to cold weather conditions and the emergence of a new Covid-19 variant, as indicated by the ministry’s data.

During the peak of the pandemic in early 2020, daily case numbers reached lakhs. Over the span of four years, the country has reported more than 4.5 crore infections and over 5.3 lakh deaths.

On a positive note, the number of recoveries from the disease has exceeded 4.4 crore, reflecting a national recovery rate of 98.81%, according to the ministry’s website. The ongoing vaccination drive has seen the administration of 220.67 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccines across the country, as reported on the website.
