Thanksgiving (2023) Movie Review
After Eli Roth’s 2007 promise that “white meat … dark meat … all will be carved, this Thanksgiving,” the feature version of the mock trailer played between Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s films in “Grindhouse” has finally arrived. The film lives up to the wait, eschewing the jump-scare tendencies of Blumhouse movies and the high-minded storytelling of A24-style elevated horror. “Thanksgiving” embraces its nastiness, drawing inspiration from ’80s films like “Mother’s Day,” “Graduation Day,” and “New Year’s Evil” rather than modern mainstream horror.
The film kicks off with a Black Friday sale that turns deadly, offering a brilliant mix of horror and comedy. Eli Roth expertly captures the chaos of a feverish mob battling for discounted items in a department store, highlighting the dark side of the consumer frenzy associated with Black Friday. The film’s satirical take on the shopping madness adds a layer of social commentary.
A year later, a killer wearing the mask of the first Plymouth, Massachusetts governor John Carver begins terrorizing the town, targeting those involved in the Black Friday tragedy. The film efficiently introduces a large cast of potential victims, giving enough depth to care about them. The script, by Jeff Rendell, injects humor into the narrative, especially regarding high schoolers’ use of social media.
“Thanksgiving” maintains a sense of lightness, akin to Wes Craven’s “Scream,” even as the terror unfolds. The film’s killer, with the face of colonialism and misbegotten tradition, adds a creepy element to the slasher narrative. While the movie is predominantly about timing and over-the-top kills, it still manages a few well-placed scares, with the jump scare being sparingly used for maximum impact.
The last third of the film tests the audience’s tolerance for sadism, and the pacing suffers a bit as it tries to tie up loose ends. The juicy reveal is delivered in a somewhat clunky fashion. Despite these flaws, “Thanksgiving” succeeds in reviving the slasher flick, offering a wickedly entertaining experience. Roth proves that, when not just a pile of guts, he can be a skilled entertainer. “Thanksgiving” stands as a testament to Roth’s ability to create a fun, engaging horror film that embraces its genre roots.
“Thanksgiving” is poised to breathe new life into studio horror, providing a refreshing alternative to supernatural and overly serious offerings. Tailored for a theatrical audience, the film’s constant momentum, specificity, and passionate execution make it a compelling passion project and a promising addition to the horror genre.
“Thanksgiving” is set to hit theaters on Thursday, November 16th.
