Financier and Philanthropist Lord Jacob Rothschild Dies at 87

Jacob Rothschild, a prominent banker and philanthropist known for his contributions to finance, the arts, and culture, has passed away at the age of 87. His family confirmed his death, though no specific cause was provided.

A seventh-generation heir of the renowned Rothschild banking dynasty, Jacob Rothschild left N.M. Rothschild & Sons Ltd. in 1980 to establish his own financial enterprise, RIT Capital Partners Plc. Under his leadership, RIT became one of the UK’s largest investment trusts. Rothschild was also involved in co-founding other ventures, including asset manager St. James’s Place Plc.

In addition to his achievements in finance, Rothschild was a dedicated philanthropist and patron of the arts. He chaired the boards of the National Gallery and the National Heritage Lottery Fund and was actively involved in the restoration of historic landmarks such as Spencer House and Waddesdon Manor.

Recognized for his contributions, Rothschild was awarded the Order of Merit by Queen Elizabeth II in 2002. He was also renowned for his art collection and had the distinction of being painted by both Lucian Freud and David Hockney.

Throughout his career, Rothschild maintained close ties to his family’s legacy while forging his own path in finance and philanthropy. His passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the worlds of business, culture, and philanthropy.
