The team responsible for Narcos—writer Doug Miro, producer Eric Newman, and director Andrés Baiz—known for narrating Escobar’s tale, has seized the opportunity in the new six-part Netflix miniseries, Griselda. Starring Sofía Vergara, who also serves as an executive producer, the series portrays the transformation of a woman into the formidable drug lord known as the Cocaine Godmother. It’s the type of bold, substantial, dramatic role that Vergara, after showcasing her comedic talent in Modern Family, surely desired.

Miro takes some liberties with Griselda’s real-life narrative. The first episode unfolds in 1978, where she, injured, gathers her three sons to escape her drug-dealing husband in Medellín, Colombia, moving to Miami, Florida. A friend, Carmen (Paulina Dávila), who underwent a similar journey years earlier, offers them shelter and provides Griselda a job at her travel agency, with the condition that she leaves the cartel life behind. Unfortunately, Griselda carries a kilo of uncut cocaine in her bag, driven by the need to provide for her family. The temptation of substantial wealth proves too strong, leading her back into the drug trade.

In reality, Griselda came to Miami to evade federal charges after successfully running a drug operation in New York City for ten years. However, an underdog narrative is more appealing, and the truth is adjusted for greater palatability.

Regardless of factual accuracy, the series captivates. Unlike Narcos, which presented Escobar’s story with a grim, gritty feel, Griselda adopts a stylized pulp semi-fiction approach, skillfully balancing on the right side of flashy direction. Despite the intense three-year period covered in the six-hour series, it manages to be the most appalling kind of fun.

Early episodes hint at the potential for more than just entertainment. The misogyny and sexism Griselda faces as she tries to sell her cocaine are depicted as formidable forces that both hinder and occasionally aid her due to low expectations. The camaraderie among the women she brings from Medellín is portrayed with nuance, revealing their shared past in a brothel. Vergara’s performance not only impresses but also showcases the impact of early brutal experiences on survival instincts and the transformation of latent propensities for violence into something truly ruthless.

The series also highlights the pervasive sexism of the time in the supposedly more civilized workplace. Latina police officer June (Juliana Aidén Martinez) faces ridicule from her fellow officers, drowning out her attempts to address the emergence of a new player in town. These scenes shed light on the biases and expectations imposed on women, even in professional settings.

As the series progresses, it leans heavily on set pieces and depictions of the horrors unleashed by Griselda in her pursuit of power and empire expansion. While it may not fully differentiate itself from Narcos or other drug cartel dramas, it remains highly enjoyable, well-paced, and visually stunning. Every performance is strong, serving as a deserved showcase for Vergara’s versatile talents. It serves as a reminder of biases held by casting directors and viewers, offering a joyful experience as these expectations are overturned—albeit at the cost of ruined bras and bloodshed.
