ImMature Season 3 Review: An Empty Campus Drama About Desperate Teens and a Lot of Nothing

Review:

Welcome to the school where students do everything except study. They go locking lips under the ‘kissing’ tree, celebrate a week full of exchanging roses, teddy bears, and promises in the run-up to Valentine’s day and spend hours trying to figure out matters of the heart. In its latest season, this show by The Viral Fever seems to have run out of not just ideas but also its purpose.

Chhaya is hopelessly in love with her best friend Dhruv, who, despite every tell-tale sign and more, is oblivious to her feelings. His friends Susu (Naman Jain) and Kabir (Chinmay Chandraunshuh) have their own problems. And the rest of the boys are just busy trying to set a ‘bandi’ for themselves. By the end of the fifth episode, precious little is achieved in terms of storytelling. Not that we expect a lot of meaning from this frivolously scripted ‘coming-of-age’ teen drama, but a repetitive narrative that doesn’t move forward makes matters worse.

Omkar Kulkarni, Chinmay Chandraunshuh, and Naman Jain reprise their characters of Dhruv, Kabir, and Susu and continue to follow the original briefs that are seeped in sickening stereotypes. Dhruv is the cool dude, the school stud, if you may, who has the license to break hearts. Kabir is the overweight and offensive youngster, who tries too hard to be funny. He often bullies his friends before they can body shame him, and his weapon of choice is the word ‘choosa’ that he uses in every second sentence. Susu is the nerdy geek, who can’t read signs of love and lust from his so-called girlfriend. One often feels that his character could have been written to potentially have a different shade, but no such exploration here. Almost every girl is portrayed as either needy or insensitive or an object to be possessed by the boys. The writing does fleetingly address this as a problem, but it’s just as superficial as the overall narrative of the show.

The best part about this season too is the short duration of all its five episodes. So, if you can content yourself with a pointless campus drama featuring mono-tone characters and an unyielding narrative, then ‘ImMature’ is just about bearable.
