Box Office Earnings: ₹65 lakh

The Bollywood film “Laapataa Ladies,” produced by Jio Studios, Kindling Pictures, and Aamir Khan Productions, premiered on March 1, grossing ₹65 lakh. Originally titled “Lost Ladies,” the movie made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 8.

Robyn Citizen, TIFF’s Director of Festival Programming and Cinematheque, praised the film’s lively pace and catchy score, initially likening it to a vibrant heist movie. However, Citizen noted that the film transcends this genre, offering insightful commentary on patriarchal marriage customs and the pressures they impose on women.

Filmed with effervescence and featuring a talented ensemble cast, “Laapataa Ladies” delivers a charming and whimsical narrative that navigates complex relationships with both depth and humor. It serves as both a comedy of errors and a poignant feminist coming-of-age story, leaving a lasting impact.

The storyline follows a newlywed man who loses his wife in a mix-up on a crowded train, mistaking another bride for her. Neither realizes the error until they reach his village, setting off a journey for the man to find his real wife and the unexpected adventures of the misplaced woman.

Directed by Kiran Rao, “Laapataa Ladies” features a fresh cast including Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastava, known for his role in the Netflix series “Jamtara – Sabka Number Ayega.” It also includes seasoned actors such as Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam, and Geeta Agrawal Sharma.
