Netflix often follows a familiar formula: take a popular box office concept, give it a Netflix twist, add a renowned star, and release it. Lift, the latest collaboration between Netflix and comedian Kevin Hart, doesn’t deviate much from this formula. Directed by F. Gary Gray, known for films like The Italian Job and Fast & Furious 8, Lift sticks to the streaming action movie formula, featuring stock characters, flashy visuals, and a plot that caters to a broad audience.

The film, written by Daniel Kunka, unfolds as a typical streaming action flick, complete with overused tropes and predictable moments. Hart plays Cyrus Whitaker, a charismatic conman leading a heist crew with expensive toys, taking on menacing adversaries. F. Gary Gray’s expertise in directing action sequences shines through, providing engaging and stressful moments, especially during a cat-and-mouse chase in the canals of Venice.

Hart departs from his usual comedic roles to play a hyper-competent leader of a heist ring. However, this shift doesn’t seamlessly align with his loud and physical brand of comedy, occasionally disrupting the suave charisma he attempts to portray. The film incorporates elements from heist movies like Ocean’s 11 and adds a Fast and Furious flavor.

The plot revolves around Cyrus and Interpol officer Abby Gladwell (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), who share a history of distrust and romance. Ordered by her boss to reconcile with Cyrus for the sake of world peace, Abby joins forces with him and his crew to steal $50 million worth of gold bars during a flight from London to Zurich.

While Lift offers baseline pleasure with its improbable heist work and in-flight sequences, it falls short in terms of character depth and chemistry between the leads. The lack of substantial characterization and chemistry hampers the film from standing out among its numerous counterparts on Netflix, leaving it as another forgettable addition to the streaming giant’s library.
