Sixty Minutes Review: An Action-Packed German Thriller
As the dust settles from the latest season of “Reacher,” viewers are now transported to Berlin for a dose of German action cinema with “Sixty Minutes.” This German action film, a unique addition to the genre, follows the gripping story of Octavio Bergmann (Emilio Sakraya), an MMA fighter facing a life-changing dilemma.
Octavio is gearing up for the most significant fight of his career, but a crucial event demands his immediate attention – his daughter Leonie’s (Morîk Maya Heydo) birthday. The film brilliantly captures the intensity of Octavio’s predicament as he grapples with the choice between a career-defining fight and his daughter’s celebration. His ex, Mina (Livia Matthes), adds another layer of complexity by setting a strict ultimatum: see his daughter by 6 pm or risk being cut out of her life forever.
Emilio Sakraya’s portrayal of Octavio is a standout performance, showcasing the physicality essential for the demanding role. The film strategically balances the action sequences, knowing precisely when to hold back and when to unleash the intensity. A notable highlight is the nightclub scene, a thrilling display of well-executed choreography and impactful hits.
The film incorporates clever visual elements, including a map of Berlin and a countdown clock, aiding viewers in navigating the fast-paced storyline. The integration of technology, particularly the use of a phone connected to EarPods via a watch, adds a contemporary touch and enhances the narrative flow. Despite some minor fantastical elements, the film maintains a sense of urgency, keeping audiences engaged during the intense time crunch.
However, as “Sixty Minutes” progresses, certain cracks in the narrative start to show. The rush towards the conclusion takes shortcuts, with characters appearing in improbable locations. While the action excels, the thin narrative becomes evident, lacking the depth needed to fully flesh out the world. A few additional minutes dedicated to world-building could have enhanced the overall experience.
In conclusion, “Sixty Minutes” is recommended for action film enthusiasts. The incorporation of MMA techniques outside the ring, coupled with tight action scenes, provides a unique cinematic experience. While the film may have benefited from a more robust narrative foundation, its 90-minute runtime delivers an adrenaline-pumping ride.

Performance Worth Watching: Sakraya, a real-life student of karate and kung fu, delivers uncomplicated emotions and a physically demanding performance, keeping the movie afloat despite the screenplay’s shortcomings.
Memorable Dialogue: The screenplay, though basic, allows for a moment of introspection: “Have I always been such a mess?” Octavio’s question adds a touch of depth to the film’s otherwise straightforward narrative.
Sex and Skin: None.
