US Advises Against Private Conversations on Pakistan’s Consultation Before Retaliatory Strikes on Iran
On Thursday (local time), the United States refrained from addressing whether Pakistan had engaged in prior consultations with Washington before conducting retaliatory air strikes on Iran.
Responding to media reports suggesting such consultations, State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller, during a routine press briefing in Washington, stated, “I do not have any private conversations to read out.”
Miller expressed U.S. concerns about escalating tensions in the region and emphasized the need for restraint on all sides. He highlighted the U.S. engagement in intense diplomatic efforts to prevent escalation and acknowledged Pakistan’s statements on the importance of cooperative relations with its neighbors.
Addressing the situation between Iran and Pakistan, Miller reiterated U.S. concerns about escalating tensions in the region, emphasizing the potential for escalation since October 7. He urged restraint and referred to Iran’s history of funding terrorism and instability in the Middle East, particularly its support for Hezbollah and Hamas.
Regarding the recent events, including Iran’s airstrikes in Pakistan and subsequent counterstrikes, Miller condemned Iran’s actions and underscored the U.S.’s commitment to holding Iran accountable. He referred to the consequences of Iran’s actions contributing to regional instability.
Miller also mentioned the U.S.’s initiation of fresh strikes against Houthi anti-ship missiles in the Red Sea, expressing concerns about disruptions in sea lanes and their potential impact on global trade and inflation.
In response to President Joe Biden’s remarks on the situation, Miller reiterated the U.S.’s stance on urging restraint, emphasizing that Pakistan remains a major non-NATO ally. Biden had noted that the air strikes indicated Iran’s lack of popularity in the region, with the White House cautioning against further escalation.
John Kirby, the US National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications, stated that the U.S. is closely monitoring the situation between Iran and Pakistan and emphasized the desire to avoid escalation.
