Marvel’s What If…? was perhaps the most peculiar addition to Kevin Feige’s overarching MCU narrative, especially receiving a confident multi-season order after its 2021 debut. Hindsight, however, has proven that some of the finest moments in Marvel’s timeline have come with the biggest surprise factor. With Loki Season 2 being the best MCU property of the year and I Am Groot’s 2023 return adding a serviceable second string to the Guardians of the Galaxy spin-off, there was reason to be hopeful for a hat-trick of sophomore successes. Fortunately, What If…? Season 2 surpasses the first season.

Closing out a year for the MCU that can be described as uneven at best, What If…? Season 2 serves as a good tonic for many of the complaints directed at the lowest achievers of the year. It is refined in a way Secret Invasion was not, avoids the perceived safety of The Marvels, and feels more substantial than the CG-bloat of Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania. While there might be some uncertainty about whether anyone has ever asked about its central elseworlds propositions, What If…? has enough fun with the multiverse concept currently weighing on the mainline MCU, making it acceptable to be frivolous in that respect.

What If…? Season 2 comprises 9 mostly unlinked episodes, tied together by Jeffrey Wright’s narration and the constant reminders of the butterfly effect conceit of the MCU multiverse. The episodes explore various propositions, including Nebula joining the Nova Corps, Happy Hogan saving Avengers Tower in a self-conscious Die Hard parody, and Tony Stark battling The Grandmaster on Sakaar. These questions might not fit the original Marvel Comics concept of What If…? releases, which felt more organically tied to actual mainline events, but Season 2 addresses this issue more effectively than Season 1 did.

Season 2 feels more assured in its narrative swings, allowing it to care less about justifying its existence and proposing at least one question relevant to the MCU’s 616 universe. The episode exploring what would have happened if Yondu had delivered Peter Quill to Kurt Russell’s Ego feels particularly relevant. Even the silliest concept, the Die Hard pastiche, is cleverly observed and gains extra points for its perfect festive timing. In comparison to James Gunn’s GOTG Holiday Special, it was more enjoyable as a Marvel Christmas offering.

While the most cynical readers may still struggle with the justification for What If…? Season 2’s existence, there are obvious attempts to balance audience rewards. The episodes offer smartly observed references to popular movies like Blade Runner, Die Hard, and The Running Man. There’s a higher level of humor than most live-action MCU releases, but nothing feels forced, thanks to the medium, and there’s a broader target demographic. Impressively, even with the close proximity of existing MCU stories, it feels like anyone could watch this without the usual daunting level of homework required by MCU lore.

If you know those stories, you’ll get added rewards in the echoes that exist here, but without that awareness, What If…? Season 2 would still be enjoyable. However, it isn’t an entirely perfect experience, as there are still unanswered questions here, somewhat ironically. The choice not to offer more episodes dedicated to logical branches of the MCU, like Bucky taking over as Captain America after Endgame, remains a mystery. Additionally, with the infinite possibilities of the multiverse and the recent example set by the SpiderVerse movies, the decision not to use different styles of animation across different stories feels like a missed opportunity.
