Congress Confirms Kamal Nath’s Decision to Stay, Ending ‘Party Switch Suspense’

Kamal Nath’s Presence in Delhi Fuels Speculation of BJP Switch Following Congress Defeat

The Congress has refuted claims that its longstanding leader from Madhya Pradesh, Kamal Nath, is planning to join the BJP. Party general secretary Jitendra Singh informed NDTV that Mr. Nath himself denied such rumors when approached on the matter. Mr. Nath’s presence in Delhi sparked speculation of a potential switch to the BJP, reportedly triggered by his removal from the state party chief post following the Congress’s significant defeat in the recent assembly election.

Backing Mr. Singh’s statement, Mr. Nath’s successor, Jitu Patwari, attributed the buzz to “media manipulation” and assured that Mr. Nath remains committed to the Congress ideology. However, some of Mr. Nath’s loyalists argue otherwise, suggesting that he has ample motivation to join the BJP, with popular support behind him.

Former Congress MLA Deepak Saxena voiced public sentiment, indicating that Mr. Nath is unfairly blamed for the party’s electoral setback and that his departure to the BJP would be welcomed for developmental reasons in Chhindwara. Saxena also highlighted internal disagreements within the Congress, citing decisions made during the state elections.

Amidst these speculations, party leaders, including Jitu Patwari, have reportedly engaged with MLAs to prevent a mass defection in case Mr. Nath decides to switch sides. Notably, concerns have been raised within the BJP regarding Mr. Nath’s potential entry due to his alleged involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Some within the BJP prefer a backup plan involving Mr. Nath’s son, Nakul Nath, joining the party.

The final decision on this matter was expected to be made by the BJP high command, according to sources familiar with the situation.
